Reeds Weybridge recorded a 30-22 victory over Weybridge Vandals 3rds on Saturday, with Reed's Chris Gore securing the victory in a close match.
The Reeds had a vast amount of experience at their disposal, in the form four previous Reeds captains – Rob Cherry, Jonathan Bower, Chris Gore and Toby Conway-Hughes, which proved to be a telling contribution, as their experience nullified the Vandals attacking options.
The early stages were cagey, as both teams looked to gain the advantage. Reeds centre Simon Pennock gained the first try of the game, bulldozing his way through the Vandals defence, the penalty was duly converted by Gore.
Yet their joy was short-lived, as just before the half time whistle the Vandals brought themselves back into the game, with a touch down in the corner.
The Reeds gained the advantage of the hill for the 2nd period, and started to prove their wealth in class, as Jonathan Satterly touched down to tip the balance of the match towards the Reeds. Two tries in quick succession by Cherry and Pennock put Reeds in a commanding position, and the chances of a Vandals victory looked very slim.
Yet uncharacteristic errors in the Reeds defence paved the way of a potential upset, the Vandals capitalised on these errors to record a couple of determined tries, the wind was firmly in their sails. However, the Reeds held their nerve to walk away victorious from this game, thanks to the class of Gore in the latter stages.
