Old Glynonians’s 26-22 Surrey Four win over Woking on Saturday was marred by injuries to three of their key players.

The Ewell-based side lost second row James Mathieson, loose head prop William Turner and outside centre Ben Rollinson to injuries within the game.

Concerns were raised after Mathieson was taken to hospital with a large cut over his right eye. Turner suffered suspected broken ribs, while Rollinson took a nasty hit to the windpipe, and had to be replaced.

Captain Freddie Coventry praised his side’s ability to hold onto the win despite the injuries.

“We played some good quick rugby, particularly in the first half,” he said.

“Some nasty injuries to key personnel and a lack of match fitness after our two-week break meant we were unable to sustain our fast game and push on for a big win.”

After some pulsating rugby in the opening quarter, the score was 15-5 to Glynonians after just 25 minutes. Glynonians’s first try came through a mixture of smart moves by back row forwards Will Burn and Mike Davis and a smooth finish by Allan Parker.

Woking were quick to reply as their left wing scored in the corner.

OG's rampaging full-back Genair Otoo capitalised on a loose ball, and shrugged off three attempted tackles by the Woking defence to score in the corner.

Yet any idea of a comprehensive OG win was ended when the injuries occured, causing them to lose their composure, as Woking continued to disrupt the OG back line in light of their injuries.

Mike Davis added a try for the home side to ease the pressure after some clever teamwork. Woking were then reduced to 14 men after the Woking flanker, who had previously been sin-binned, was shown a yellow card for a late shoulder charge on John Yates.

To their credit, Woking kept on fighting despite the numerical disadvantage, and OG were made to pay for lapses in the field, with the Woking fly-half continuing to be the star man for the away side as OG conceded a try under the posts.

Another error allowed Woking to sense a potential victory, yet a resolute performance for the last five minutes ensured that the wounded Old Glynonians gained the points.

Old Glynonians have been thrown out of the EDF Junior Vase for fielding three ineligible players in their preliminary round match against Streatham-Croydon, who will now take their place in the first round.
