The countdown has begun for this year’s Nomura Varsity rugby match at Twickenham Stadium on December 10 (2pm).
Although Cambridge lead Oxford 60-53, with 14 matches drawn, in the history of the event, Oxford triumphed 33-29 last year.
There will be plenty of talent on show with lock Dan Vickerman, who has won 52 caps for Australia, leading Cambridge, with former England U16 hooker Dan Rosen taking charge of Oxford.
Vickerman, who is midway through a three-year land economy course at Hughes Hall College, was a member of last season’s losing team.
“As a group we are really looking forward to the challenges a new season brings and playing against a host of teams that include a number of full-time professionals,” said Vickerman.
Rosen, a three time Blue and Barbarian, is currently studying for a D Phil in Pharmacology at Worcester Park and will be hoping to lead his side to victory for a second successive year.
Said Rosen, "Whilst we are all brimming with excitement as we embark on the new season, it is important not to look too far ahead of ourselves. The boys have worked hard over the summer and have come back in great shape. Already as a squad we are looking sharp. I have every confidence this will be another memorable season."
Nomura will sponsor the Varsity match for the second time this year, Sadeq Sayeed, chief executive of Nomura, EMEA said: "We are delighted to continue our relationship with Oxford and Cambridge universities and reaffirm Nomura's exclusive sponsorship of the Varsity Match. Last year's match was a tense affair and we're hoping for an equally exciting game this December."
Paul Vaughan, RFU business operations director, said: "The atmosphere at the Varsity Match is always electric and being so close to Christmas it's the perfect excuse for an office get together. The Varsity Match is an essential date in the rugby calendar and last year's match was probably one of the best games of the season with Oxford closing the gap on Cambridge. Oxford have it all to play for again this year as they try to win back to back victories."
Tickets for the Twickenham spectacular start from £20.00 (£10.00 for students with a valid NUS card) and are available online from varsitymatch.org or by calling Ticketmaster on 0844 847 2492.
