Richmond director of rugby Geoff Richards has revealed extra homework for his players was behind his side’s return to form at Henley on Saturday.

The Athletic Ground chief had players watching videos of their performance against Rosslyn Park over the internet during the week and it paid dividends with a 36-25 victory at the weekend.

The Australian has long been frustrated by a lack of time with his part-time squad, but has embraced technology in recent weeks allowing his men to watch themselves in action from the comfort of their own homes.

It means Richards was able to concentrate training on set-pieces and defensive patterns during the week, which helped lay the foundation for Saturday’s win with two tries coming from interceptions.

“It is a a bit like setting homework for the players. We only get them twice a week and if you have to do an hour of video analysis at the club it gives you less time on the training pitch,” he said.

“I was very pleased with the win. We put together some good rugby at times and put a lot of pressure on them defensively, that resulted in us getting two interception tries.

“We worked really hard on lineouts and on getting some solidity in the forward pack. That enabled us to get a solid platform.

“It is one step at the time at the moment. Once we’ve got the basics we can start looking at our attacking play.”

Tries from Jono Farmer, Kris Greene, Andy Saunders, Alistair Simmie and Gavin Hart secured the bonus point win that took Richmond up to eighth in the table - one point ahead of Saturday’s visitors Worthing.

Richards handed a debut to newly signed Argentinean international hooker Federico Rodriguez, when he emerged from the bench in the second-half to replace Alistair Lyons.

And the coach, who will be without unavailable skipper Henry Head this week, reckons a more settled side is going to be able to take advantage of the winning feeling.

“Nothing breeds confidence like winning. I’m just hoping we can build on this after what has been a pretty difficult start,” he added.

“There are clearly no games in this league where we can turn up and expect to get five points, we have to be on top of our game each week.

“This weekend will be not different. Both teams are in mid-table and looking to get themselves up the ladder.”

Richmond’s next three games: Oct 10 Worthing (h), 17 Southend (a), 24 Westcombe Park (h).
