Grasshoppers went down 37-10 at home to UCS Old Boys in a classic game of two halves on Saturday, writes Pete Baveystock.
Playing down the slop in the first half, Grasshoppers made a great start but failed to turn their pressure into m any points.
Manu Pati, set up by his centre partner scored a wonderful try that Gerwyn Hughes converted, but UCS – playing into the wind as well as up the slope - hit back with an uncoverted try.
Hughes stretched Grasshoppers’ lead to 10-5 with another penalty, but that was as good as it got and UCS grabbed a converted try to make it 12-10 at half-time.
Unfortunately for Grasshoppers, the breeze stiffened in the second half, and UCS made the most of the conditions to run in four tries.
Russell Cowley was player of the day for Grasshoppers, who play Hampstead in the Middlesex Cup this Sunday (2pm).
