Staines have continued their golden spell of rugby during November, amassing 196 points for and nil against.

They have scored 29 tries, 18 conversions and five penalties.

Saturdays opponents Welwyn were a young side who will have learned much by the clinical approach taken by a side who is playing some high intensity heads up rugby.

Coaches Greg and Bogey Knights have worked hard at quick release ball from the contact area and have encouraged a back line to attack from any area of the field.

The Staines pack have performed well over the past few weeks and have kept to the basics of producing safe ball for half backs James Robinson and Richard Mahony to make things happen.

Staines took early control and first half and try’s by stand off Richard Mahony, captain Tom Cleary, Mark Smith, Mickey Wilmott, John Lake and James Robinson, laid a platform which tested the teams concentration for the duration of the game.

Staines looked comfortable in all areas and if it was not for the grit which was shown in defence by a young but keen Welwyn side, Staines would have chalked up a massive score.

The quality of play in the second half did go through some disruption as Staines lost debutant Matt Thomas, but with a strong bench they ran in 4 further try’s by James Cornish, Mickey Wilmott, John Lake and Mark Smith. Richard Mahony had a good day with the boot scoring 21 points in total.

The month of November has laid a great platform where the team performance will be tested during December in 3 games, 2 of which will be against League contenders.

With Staines second XV providing good squad depth, it will be now down to the players to take their current form and add some mental toughness to meet the challenges which are imminently before them.

Staines are away to second place Chingford RFC this coming Saturday 14.00 KO.
