Twickenham RFC pushed league leaders London Irish Amateurs all the way but finished up going down 21-14 on Saturday.

With prop Tim Aldridge on England Deaf duty, his replacement Lloyd Chivandire had his best game to date with a destructive performance in both the set piece and open play.

There was also saw a return to the fly-half spot for Jamie See who – following in the footsteps of former Richmond College player Delon Armitage – has recently been selected to represent England Colleges.

Irish opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a penalty, but Twickenham responded when a crash ball from centre Joe Ash and a darting run from veteran Jimmy Peters allowed Charlie l’Anson to stride over for the first of two tries.

With Irish missing two close-range penalties, Twickenham led 7-3 at half-time.

Each team’s ability to capitalise on players being sent to the sin bin had a decisive factor on the game.

When Twickenham went down to 14 men just minutes into the second half, Irish added 15 points to their tally - taking a lead of 18-7 with a penalty and two tries against a spirited defence.

However, when the Irish hooker was shown the yellow card with 20 minutes to go, Twickenham failed to put any points on the board despite having played some of their best free-flowing attacking rugby of the season.

Discipline as a whole also played a major role though as the Irish were awarded seven penalties within kicking range while Twickenham were not able to capitalise on their hard-fought field position and were awarded none.

Irish’s last penalty came with only minutes to go taking the score to 7-21 but Twickenham mounted a last minute attack resulting in a second try for I’Anson who was awarded man-of-the match for his tireless work around the park and excellent support play.
