Old Walcountians recovered from a 10-point deficit to record a convincing first win in 2010 against relegation-threatened Bec Old Boys.

Bec, desperate to retain their Surrey One status, got the first try after 29 minutes against run of play.

A rare foray into Walcountians’ 22 saw their forwards recycle the ball from a ruck and their fly-half burst through to touch down.

Six minutes later, Bec were 10 points clear when their full-back set up a ruck from which the ball was swept across the three-quarter line for the right winger to go over in the corner.

Walcountians’ fightback began just before half-time when scrum-half Wally Fourie took a quick tap penalty and sprinted past a stunned home defence to score a try that full-back Ollie Beales converted.

Walcountians were successfully kept at bay by Bec’s defence in the first 15 minutes of the second half before the floodgates opened with three tries in five minutes.

The first two came from Kiwi centre Dan Crompton, now re-established in the first team after a shoulder injury. Crompton’s first came after fly-half Chris Mockford and fellow centre Sam Naylor set him up to break clear and touch down. Three minutes later, Crompton scored again when he collected the ball near the Bec 10 metre line and outpaced the Bec defence in a race for the line. The 20th minute of the game saw Chris Mockford on the scoresheet after he broke from midfield and swerved past the Bec defence to touchdown. Ollie Beales converted two of the three tries to put Walcountians 16 points clear.

Walcountians scored two more tries in the final 10 minutes.

First, prop Ben Anderson smashed his way through a packed defence from a tap penalty 10m out.

Then, in stoppage time, number eight Gavin Walsh broke from halfway out, shrugged off two attempted tackles, and put replacement centre Callum Stone clear to touch down.

Walcountians, who moved up to fourth in Surrey One, host second-placed Old Whitgiftians at Clock House this Saturday (2.30pm).
