Woodford 13 Staines 58

Staines produced a near-flawless performance to take them nearer to the London One North title on Saturday.

They opened the game in some style, taking an early lead through the boot of fly-half Richard Mahony and, although Woodford levelled the scores, Staines got the first try.

Wilmott came into the line, making good yardage before off-loading to centre Heke, who put full-back Regan in to score the first try.

Mahony converted and Staines went ahead 10-3.

Staines increased the tempo, and great support play from every player on the park put Woodford under considerable pressure.

Two further successful penalties from Mahony were their reward, quickly followed by a superb try from wing Smith.

The move started on the Staines 22, the ball passing through several pairs of hands before being fed to Wilmot, who cut in from his wing, setting the ball up nicely to the supporting Regan, who put Smith through for the score.

Mahony converted and Staines deservedly went into half-time 23-3 ahead.

The second half saw an early penalty awarded to Woodford, who narrowed the lead to 17 points but, before long, Staines had extended the score line with a try from Turner.

The Staines forwards, by now totally dominant in all phases, shunted the Woodford pack backwards in their own 22. The ball popped up to scrum-half Robinson, who off-loaded to Smith, whose pace stretched the home side's defence and he slipped the ball inside to the supporting Turner to score.

The conversion narrowly failed but Staines were now ahead 28-6.

Woodford were not prepared to capitulate at this point, scoring a try of their own, breaching the seemingly impregnable Staines defence with some determined running.

The try was converted but Staines, unhappy with this blemish on an otherwise flawless display, hit back immediately with two penalty goals and a try from centre Wells.

A 30m break by Turner took the ball deep into the Woodford 22 and the robust Wells was on hand to take the try-scoring pass, his strength taking him through the last line of defence.

Staines were now hitting top gear and Carr, in top form since his recent comeback, took the ball from the base of the scrum and fed wing Wilmott on the blindside who, from 60m out, outpaced the Woodford defence to score. Mahony converted.

An equally devastating piece of rugby followed. Smith, taking a quick 22 dropout, tore into Woodford territory with a 50m gain before off-loading to centre Heke for a well-deserved try. Wells added the extras this time.

The game was completed with a try from number eight Carr following a catch and drive by the Staines forwards.
