Warlingham marked their golden oldies lunch, where more than 150 guests reflected on their own playing days, by romping to a six-try 36-0 rout of Lewes on Saturday.

Skipper Tom Street led from the front for Warlingham, playing in unfamiliar green jerseys because of a colour clash.

They never looked back from an early foray into the Lewes half by the Warlingham pack that ended with Street, cleverly positioned in the centre, shaking off would-be tacklers to score under the posts. Fly-half Joe Chivers converted.

From the restart, a frantic kick out of defence by the Lewes full-back fell to winger Jon Osborne. He provided the pass for bearded number eight Mark Macaskill to take a clear run through the visitors’ defence for the second try - Chivers again adding the extras.

Desperate defence denied Macaskill a try but, with full-back James Agate and centre Alex Glover breaching the visitors’ back line at every opportunity, it was only a matter of time before they scored again.

The inevitable came from winger Ben Wimble, who came off his wing to give Chivers a third easy conversion.

It took more than 30 minutes for Lewes to take play into the Warlingham half, but stout tackling from the home side halted a succession of drives and Warlingham always looked quick on the counter-attack.

When a kick ahead was drilled into the Lewes 22, the visiting full-back hesitated and Osborne snaffled the ball before scampering over for Warlingham’s fourth try.

After the restart, Lewes showed promise when in possession but, again, Warlingham’s defence was equal to their efforts.

And when quickly recycled ball gave Warlingham’s backs another opportunity, a long miss-pass from Glover allowed Macaskill to score his second try.

The rout was completed when Chivers sliced through the Lewes backs on the half-way line and, after virtually every Warlingham back had been involved, looped around to touch down in the corner.

Warlingham head coach Bill Maynard said: “This was another good performance against strong opposition.

“We have scored 19 tries in the past three games, which is very pleasing.

“We put together some good phases of play, but there is still more to come from these lads.”

This Saturday, Warlingham visit second-placed Hove against whom they drew 10-10 earlier in the season.
