Skipper Rich Holmden reckons Old Glynonians have sent out a warning to next season’s potential opponents after storming into the Surrey Bowl semi-finals, writes Chris Justham.
Glynonians, who are top of Surrey Four, crushed Old Tiffinians, who lead the division above, 29-0 last weekend.
“It was a massive game for us because we wanted to know how we measured up to the teams in the league above,” said Holmden.
“I think we got our answer.
“A mention has to go to Steve Pawson, whose coaching over the past few weeks has had a real influence on our performance.
“The increased try-count alone speaks volumes.”
The Ewell-based club is in only its third season of existence, but landed the Surrey Bowl at the end of its inaugural season in 2008.
And they started with real purpose on Saturday as they looked to progress in this season’s competition, forcing Tiffinians to concede an penalty that Daniel Bailey converted.
That was followed swiftly with a superbly taken drop-goal by the same player.
The points on the board seemed to lift OGs, and the expansiveness of their running rugby during the following 35 minutes reflected their growing confidence.
The scrum – something of a weakness at the beginning of the season – was dominant throughout, allowing number eight Matt Djadali to make a number of marauding runs into the Tiffs’ backline.
Tom Burns and Ben Rollinson were tireless in their control of the midfield in the second half, and the fact that Glynonians did not concede a point proved that point.
Glynonians can clinch the Surrey Four title when they visit Reigate on Saturday, March 27.
