Weybridge Vandals head coach Ian Bardgett watched his side secure London Division Two South West survival in style at the weekend, but admitted it was a season of what might have been.

Number eight Darren Livett took his try haul to 12 for the campaign in an emphatic eight-try 50-0 triumph over relegation threatened London South Africa, making it four wins in a row for Vandals - their best run of form this season.

Bardgett is hoping his men can secure a top-half finish on their return to this level following last year’s London Division Four South West title triumph.

Vandals have lost seven games by less than a score, where wins would have put them firmly in the title chase for a second successive campaign.

And the Brownacres chief reckons his side’s recent return to winning ways only makes that thought more frustrating.

“It is unfortunate because when you are on a run of form like we are now you reflect on the games we lost by one or two points and you think of what could have been,” he said.

“If I’m honest, I’ve been a little bit disappointed with the commitment to training considering we have invested a lot of time in it. By rights, we shouldn’t be achieving the results we are.

“Mid-table is a pretty good position to be in given we have just come up, but without being negative, I think we could have done an awful lot more with the same level of commitment as last year.

“Finishing sixth would be a good achievement and a successful season, but at the end of the day I think we all know we could done a little bit better.”

Vandals cut lose to put the exiled Springboks to the sword at the weekend to set up an intriguing trip to Trojans this weekend, with Bardgett’s men looking to avenge their only defeat of last season.

“We are looking to finish strongly obviously. Points difference could play a big part in us finishing sixth,” he added.

“It makes Saturday’s game a four pointer for us. They will be pleased with their efforts this season. Everything points towards it being a good game.”

Vandals’ final two matches: Mar 27 Trojans (a), Apr 10 Tottonians (h).
