Staines took another step towards National League rugby by running in 13 tries at bottom side Welwyn on Saturday.
The Hanworth side didn’t take long to get the scoreboard moving. Their forwards put pressure on a Welwyn scrum and flanker Mursall fed the backs for wing Micky Wilmott to score. Wells converted.
It was soon 12-0 as Regan made an interception, prop Gibson gained 30m and centre wells took the inside pass to score.
Number eight Carr then caught the ball from the kick off and set off an a 50m run, before feeding the backs who put Wilmott in for his second try.
The Staines forwards were in control of every aspect of play and Carr picked up from the base of the scrum and pulled off a neat reverse pass to fellow back row Mursall, who put wing into space down the blindside for the inevitable try. Wells’ conversion made it 24-0.
Staines then went off the boil and Welwyn kept them out for the next 15 minutes until a show-and-go from Carr saw him go down the narrowest of blindsides to score, Wells adding his third conversion.
Wing forward Turner, whose pace was causing Welwyn considerable problems, then set off a 50m run before hitting centre Heke with a defence-splitting pass and a stunning try. Wells converted.
Then came Wilmott’s third try. Hooker Shanahan, who had another fine game, hit a Welwyn ruck to secure a turnover and the ball was worked to the win for Wilmott to score. Wells’ conversion made it 45-0 at the break.
Coaches Mark and Greg Knights run the changes, bringing on second row Jake Young, from St Mary’s College, and his youth and athleticism made an immediate impression.
Fly-half Regan dummied and slipped through a gap in the Welwyn defence to score the next try, again converted by Wells.
Staines wing Wilmott got his fourth try when he worked hard from the 22m line to penetrate Welwyn’s cover. Wells converted.
Then strong running saw Young stopped short of the try line but he cleverly popped the ball up for Carr to score. Wells’ conversion made it 66-0.
Full-back James Cornish cmae in from the line to score next, taking the ball on the 22m line, drifting wide then straightening at pace to cruise over. Wells converted.
Young then scored a debut try, muscling over from close range. Wells converted yet again.
Finally, man-of-the-match Carr sealed the win with a customary dummy to make it a hat-trick of tries, and Wells crowned a great game by plundering the extras.
In all, wing Wilmott scored four tries and Carr three, with Wells’ 11 conversions giving him a 27-point haul.
Staines host fourth-placed Chingford at The Reeves on Saturday.
