Old Wimbledonians ran out 12-8 winners in a scrappy clash with struggling Kingston on Saturday.

The result virtual ensures Wimbledonians’ safety for another season, but they didn’t have things all their own way.

After the homes centres encroached offside, Kingston went ahead with a third-minute penalty.

Thereafter, further penalties were missed until the 37th minute when a careless pass was intercepted by a Kingston centre who ran unopposed until forcing his way past the attentions of George Attipoe to score.

From the restart, the Old Boys forwards forced their way towards the Kingston line where some quickly recycled possession and quick handling enabled Attipoe to score a try in the corner which Matthew Jones could not quite convert.

This meant Kingston led 8-5 at half-time.

The second half continued evenly with Jones, Alex Horley and Richard Travers making breaks which came to nothing.

In injury time, a probing touch kick from Travers and a successful line-out jump by Alex Prew brought a driving maul led by Josh Brett and Matthew Bell.

Kingston’s forwards were pushed back over their own line and Bell claimed the winning touchdown, Jason Murphy adding a splendid touchline conversion.
