Old-Mid Whitgiftian head coach Mick Jones believes his side can be competitive in London Two next season after securing promotion with three games left on Saturday.

Fly half Dan Crouch scored 21 points in a 31-3 win over promotion rivals Fordingbridge that, coupled with Ellingham & Ringwood's 20-0 defeat to Sandown & Shanklin, guaranteed second spot behind Gosport and Fareham in London Three South West.

"I don't see any reason why we cannot compete," he said.

"The players we have got here at the moment are certainly good enough but it all comes down to whether we can continue to play as a team.

"It will be extra time to get a few more players in to strengthen the squad and also give the existing players a chance to prove they can play in that league."

Old Mid recovered from losing their first three games of the season to win 14 of their next 15 matches and Jones put much of their resurgence down to Crouch.

"Dan has been great," said Jones.

"You only have to look at the statistics as he didn't play the first three games and we lost them.

"We didn't have a recognised kicker but since he came back in his boot has certainly won us games this season.

"After that start to the season it was about getting back to playing the game the way we can play and changing attitudes."

Old Mid also welcomed back second row Ikenna Ezegbe-Akpunonu, after the Nigerian's deportation hearing was postponed and he was bailed from Dover Detention Centre on Thursday.

"He came off the bench and it was fantastic to have him back," said Jones.

"I got an email from him on Thursday afternoon asking what time I was going to pick him up for training that night."
