Sutton & Epsom skipper Steve Munford reckons his side’s National Division Three London future remains in the lap of the gods.

Head coach Terry O’Connor’s men secured a 34-19 triumph over fellow strugglers Portsmouth on Saturday - only their fifth win of a troubled season - to keep hopes of survival alive.

Sutton need to beat relegation threatened Diss and mid-table North Walsham in the remaining two games and hope others around them slip up if they are to beat the drop.

And scrum-half Munford, who has been filling in at fly-half since Christmas, insists the squad will leave no stone unturned in their bid to remain a National League club.

“I suppose mathematically it is still possible, but realistically we have to get two bonus point wins to stand a chance of staying up,” he said.

“Even then we have to rely on other teams making mistakes. We’ve given ourselves a chance, but it is out of our hands.

“All we can do is do our bit and then hope and pray that things go our way.”

Sutton secured a bonus point triumph at the weekend through tries from Sean Kent (2), Richard Nicholls, Munford and flanker Ian White to create an opportunity to secure safety.

Injuries and unavailability have played their part in a wretched campaign that opened with seven straight defeats, starting with a 22-15 defeat at North Walsham on the opening day.

But Munford is confident that if the fates decide they are to be relegated, Sutton will bounce back stronger for the experience.

“It has hit home what you need to compete at this level,” he added.

“You need a big squad with a lot of players capable of playing in the National Leagues.

“Generally we have been pretty competitive. We have only been really hammered once or twice this season.

“For the younger players it is a hard place to learn your game.

“If we drop down it will be a little easier for them and with the experience we have gained this year, I would expect us to bounce back stronger.”

Sutton’s final two games: Apr 3 Diss (h), 10 North Walsham (h).
