Reeds Weybridge’s final Surrey Jonap Reserve League game of the season looked a tough prospect, their opponents having beaten high flying Old Whitgiftians earlier in the season and OWs had beaten Reeds convincingly just last week.
However, Reeds runners proved were the deciding factor in their win by a five try margin. Up front it was a different story.
Guildfordians’ huge forwards did untold damage in the tight and the loose that sent Reeds rocking back on several occasions, it was only some splendid work by Reeds outstanding forward Don Ammon who, in combination with their gutsy scrum half Chris Cowlap managed to secure the ball.
It was Ammon’s work in the open play that was so impressive as well, so often he collected the loose ball and took route one up the park, it was just what was needed in the circumstances. When Reeds did get the ball they used the open spaces so well, Cowlap and fly half Chris Gore orchestrated many good things that unleashed some powerful running from the Kelly brothers, Laurence and Rob, and centre Matt Rogers, once they got going Guildfordians had real trouble.
Gore opened up the scoring with a try under the sticks, followed by one from Cowlap, who wriggled over and Gore banged over the extra points. It isn’t often that someone who hasn’t played for over 20 years gets on the score sheet, but that is what happened to lock forward Paul Howard.
The Guildfordian defenders were in some trouble 10 metres out, Reeds were awarded the lineout, Howard took the ball at pace and was over the line before a hand could be laid on him.
Another 50m rampaging run brought a try for Reeds No 8 Ollie Tait just before the interval and probably secured the game.
But, with slope advantage after the restart, Alex Roberts oon bashed his way over for Guilfordians.
Reeds didn’t look quite so comfortable for a short while after but then they collected another three tries, one from young LaurenceKelly and another from Gore and centre Rogers and it was game over.
Late on Guildfordians star forward big Barney Bragg rumbled over for a well deserved try. It was a clear win for Reeds but a great game for players and spectators alike, expertly controlled by refereed Paul Garrad.
