Assistant coach Phil Greening reckons the Championship could be the perfect place for Welsh international Gavin Henson to kick-start his return to the game.

The 28-year-old Ospreys star has signalled he will end his self-enforced exile from the sport next season having taken a break to recover fully from injury.

London Welsh, who are three wins from reaching the Guinness Premiership, are to seal a link-up with the Magners League outfit that could see some of the Swansea-based side’s men head to Old Deer park on loan.

The deal will see academy and fringe first team players featuring in head coach Danny Wilson’s squad next season, as well as those players feeling their way back from the physio’s bench.

And should the Exiles fail in their attempt to reach the English game’s top-flight this time around, Greening believes Henson could do worse than pitch up in west London at the start of next season.

“The finer details are still to be signed off I think, but it will benefit us from a playing and commercial point of view, “ he said.

“Player placement in the Championship is a perfect development tool for academy players and young professionals. The Welsh Premiership doesn’t have the competitive edge this league has.

“Ideally we’d want players that can commit for a whole season and not just a month or two.

“I had a spell injured and out of form when I was at Wasps and went away with the England sevens squad and came back a changed man.

“Sometimes a change of environment and different competition can make the difference. Coming to London could suit Gavin and it could be something he will benefit from as he gets back into it.”

Welsh chief executive John Taylor, who is supposedly also in talks over a possible ground share project with Brentford next season, was reportedly in Swansea last week hammering out the finer points of the agreement.

It is yet to be confirmed if the Exiles will move their training base to south Wales as part of the deal.
