Warlingham pushed London One high-flyers Cobham all the way before being pipped in the Surrey Shield semi-final played under floodlights.

Warlingham head coach Bill Maynard said: “I am so proud of the lads - their attitude and commitment were first class and the club can thank them for an outstanding effort.”

The hosts started strongly, forcing the visitors to give away penalties and full-black Joe Chivers slotted two for Warlingham, with Cobham replying with one of their own.

With the Warlingham pack pouring forward, Osborne and Stamp combined to stretch the Cobham defence allowing Miles Waud to shimmy through the last man to score under the posts.

Chivers added the conversion. Giant prop Darren Walker took the ball at tremendous pace on the halfway line to splinter the Cobham back line only to be hauled down metres from the posts.

Again the Cobham player was forced to give away another penalty which Chivers gratefully converted. Further penalties from Cobham resulted in one of their players being shown a yellow card by the referee.

At half time Cobham seemed to be on the rack but Warlingham were beset by an injury to Waud and the fluidity of the Warlingham game suffered.

A well rehearsed rolling maul from Cobham resulted in a converted try which was quickly followed by a penalty.

The Cobham forwards finally gained some momentum and swift ball let their right winger in for a second try.

The conversion meant Cobham finally took the lead by one point. From a halfway skirmish Warlingham skipper Tom Street emerged with the ball and sprinted unsupported to the Cobham 22 but he was brought down by a desperate tackle and the attack failed.

In the dying moments Cobham again advanced down the right flank scoring a final try which was excellently converted from the touchline.

Cobham now face London Irish Amateurs in the Final.
