Reeds scheduled fixture against London Media was cancelled, leaving Reeds to pick up a game on the fixture exchange against Old Blues, writes George Spinks.
However, at the start of the game Old Blues were short of a few players whilst Reeds had more than enough which then saw Reeds Chairman, Ed Peters turning out for the hosts, not so strange as Peters father is an Old Blue.
Because of all the changes the game lacked some edge but at least it gave both sides an easy introduction into the new season, it certainly had plenty of action and running rugby, splendidly refereed by Simon Tarr from Guildford RFC who had the good sense to keep the game moving rather than stop the game for minor infringements.
Reeds new 1st XV skipper Ben Lewis had a good afternoon up front, his work in the tight scrums ensured that the Reeds pack was always going forward, and in the loose as well with several effective charges around the base of the mauls.
At half time Reeds had nudged ahead with two tries, the first from flanker Richard Glasson who was so keen to run the ball whenever he had the chance, then young Chris Cowlap, the scrum half stole away to touch down in the corner. Old Blues replied late on in the second half with their only try of the game, but after the restart Cowlap squeezed in for his second and late on Martin Biggs the winger dived over after the forwards had rumbled play to within five metres of the try line.
Next week Reeds are at home to Old Rutlishians, Ruts were comprehensive winners last season and Reeds will be keen to deliver spirited response.
