Grasshoppers won 23-18 over Welwyn at MacFarlane Lane on Saturday, writes Pete Baveystock.
It was mission accomplished with a bonus point for scoring four tries doubling their league points to ten and pulling them to mid table.
Welwyn for their part earned a well deserved bonus point of their own and kept the game alive to the final whistle.
So G’s kicked off down the slope and were five points up within two minutes when their pack drove over from a line out with flanker, Chris Denby coming up with the ball for the unconverted try.
Then almost straight away they were on the rampage again with the backs showing lots of flair as stand off, Stuart Daniels slipped in for a second unconverted try to make the score 10-0.
The momentum was maintained with both G’s backs and forwards well on top and within fifteen minutes the score had been extended to 18-0 with a Tom Orishaguna penalty and David Bird try.
Welwyn though rose to the challenge and stemmed the flow and started to maintain some possession and clawed their way back into the game with a converted try, a penalty to round the half off 18-10.
Welwyn, with the slope kept up the pressure with Gs failing to build any pressure of their own and were soon rewarded with an unconverted try to close the gap to a nail biting18-15.
G’s though stemmed the Welwyn pressure and got themselves back into the game with a well taken try from number eight, Jason Robbins which went unconverted but stretched the lead to eight points.
And so with virtually the last kick of the game Welwyn earned their bonus point by pulling the score to within seven points with a well taken penalty to make the final score 23-18. Grasshoppers “Player of the Day” being prop Mike Pellow.
G’s seconds went away to London Scottish and won 18-11 and to make it a full house G’s 3rds beat an Ealing side 19-12.
