Fly half Tom Platt may have spent time playing for Championship side Rotherham’s second string, but it is his switch to Richmond that has seen him find his form.

The flame-haired number 10 put in another man-of-the-match display on Saturday, but finished on the wrong end of a 37-24 defeat to Henley Hawks at the Athletic Ground.

The former Leeds University student is in his second season with director of rugby Steve Hill’s men and has played a big part in his side’s impressive start to the National Division Two South campaign.

He delivered a kicking masterclass in last week’s 18-13 triumph at Dings Crusaders, where he was also forced – through a succession of injuries – to play three different positions.

But the financial analyst insisted he did not mind being versatile because it has only been good for his game.

“We are lucky to have a lot of good players so there are often positional changes from week to week,” he said.

“That can be difficult to adapt to but you know every player who comes in is going to give 100 per cent and make selection difficult.

“I came down to London having played on Monday nights for Rotherham’s second team and I feel playing for Richmond has really developed my rugby.

“I like being able to play in different positions. I work hard on my kicking and hopefully I can kick the points as well as play with the ball in hand.”

Richmond had led 15-8 at the break on Saturday – through tries from David West and Juliano Fiori – but two Hawks tries in the opening five minutes of the second half ultimately cost Hill’s men.

Henley added a third before Platt nudged the first of three second-half penalties, but the visitors always had the upper hand as they rounded off the scoring with a penalty and a late try.

And Platt is convinced his side will bounce back at Lydney on Saturday.

“They’ll be smelling blood after seeing this result, but we will regroup and deliver a performance. No problem,” he added.

“Other clubs have a bit of money behind their squads, but we’ve got good spirit and we will bounce back.”

Meanwhile, Louis Mather and Matt janney have been named in the Oxford University team for next week's Varsity clash with Cambridge University at Twickenahm stadium.
