London Welsh wing Joe Ajuwa gives new meaning to the saying about taking your chances when they come.

Having had to wait for his opportunity to impress Exiles head coach Lyn Jones, Ajuwa crossed twice in the Exiles’ 24-9 win at Plymouth Albion on Saturday to take his tally for the season to seven tries in nine appearances in all competitions.

While he may not be the Championship’s leading try scorer, he is arguably its most prolific, with five tries in just five appearances.

And having spent some time in Wales – with Llandovery and the Scarlets – since a friendly appearance for the Exiles two years ago, he is making up for lost time.

“I’m very pleased at the moment, but it’s a team effort and I’ve just been fortunate to be on the end of some good moves by the team,” he said.

“The guys are just making me look good at the moment.

“I went down to Wales to try to improve my game having taken a few years out of professional rugby.

“Last season I had lots of injuries so it’s been really nice this season to be able to keep training and playing, and use the things I learnt in Wales.”

And his try scoring record this season would suggest Ajuwa is putting what he has picked up into practice.

“Working off the ball is so important. You look at some of the best players right now, and they work so hard off the ball,” he added.

“It’s not just standing there, getting the ball and trying to do something amazing every time.

“It’s a passion to play, a passion to want to do stuff and I’d say it’s what the Welsh teams are doing very well at the moment.”

Vili Ma’asi and Will Hurrell got the other tries on Saturday to deliver a fifth straight win in all competitions.

Jones’ men put their impressive defensive record on the line when they host second-placed Bedford Blues at 12.30pm on Saturday.
