Head coach Gary Street has praised the depth of his squad after England Women beat world champions New Zealand twice in four days.

Richmond scrum half-turned-hooker Amy Turner came off the bench as her side beat the Black Ferns 10-0 at Twickenham on Saturday in the first of a three-match Test series between the two countries.

Street made 11 changes to that team – including starting Kingston’s Turner at hooker – at Esher on Tuesday night, but the outcome was the same as his side won 21-7 to clinch the series.

Richmond’s Kay Wilson, Rachael Burford, Rebecca Essex and Alexandra Matthews also started the clash, with Rowena Burnfield coming off the bench.

They will all be hoping they can avenge last year’s World Cup final defeat to New Zealand at the Stoop, by claiming a series whitewash when the two teams clash again at Esher on Saturday.

And Street, who singled out 18-year-old Matthews for special praise, admitted the two games had given him a selection headache.

“I am so proud of the performances the players have put in, but also really glad that I had faith in the whole squad to make 11 changes,” he said.

“They didn’t panic when I made the changes to the starting line-up, instead they showed real character.

“The backrow was superb. With three young players starting, they were outstanding.

“Alexandra Matthews – in particular – was a revelation playing as an 18 year old against the world champions.

“I have promised the players I will pick the best available side for Saturday’s game, but selection will not be easy given the performances of all 26 players in the squad.

“I am already looking forward to the final game.”
