After 13 years on the big screen, the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has finally made its way to the small screen. Or well it is the first time if you exclude the ABC and Netflix tv shows such as Daredevil and Agents of Shield which Kevin Feige has confirmed are separate from the films. The MCU started out airing ‘WandaVision’ on Disney + and has continued with its most recent show ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ airing on the 19th of March 2021 with around 9.9 million accounts signing in to watch the premiere. The show recently ended on the 23rd of April 2021 after 6, 45-55 minute long, episodes. So how was it?
‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ followed the lives of Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) as they manage their lives after the fall out of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ where some of earths mightiest heroes fell and half the population came back in the blip. Both characters were originally introduced in Captain America movies, Bucky in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and Sam in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, with them meeting due to their friendships with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) however after Steve disappeared the only thing linking the duo was Captains America shield which Steve had given to Sam. Throughout the show the characters move from friends of friends to colleagues to brothers, whilst having to fight an equalist organisation that had emerged due to the blip and growing into their new titles as Captain America and The White Wolf.
The show was well received from Marvel fans around the world with people growing to love past enemies, debates over who’s the good guys and freak outs over mentions of characters from other MCU projects such as ‘Black Panther’. Jaime 17 said “I liked the character development and how both sides were shown neither being purely bad, although it was very serious.” after finishing the show. Like all things the show did have some complaints from fans such as the writers focusing too much on racism and plot-twists being predictable however other people loved these things about the show, so it just goes to show you can't please everyone.
Despite some criticism the show overall was loved by fans with people quickly calling for a season two or a new Captain America movie with Sam Wilson as the main character. And similar to other MCU projects ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ left many opportunities for characters stories to continue in other projects. So, the only question left to ask is when will these characters return Marvel?
