On the 2nd March, Purley rotary club hosted its annual swimathon. Three sessions of six teams, each team swimming as far as they could in 55 minutes.
Many varieties of charities were represented, some were represented by the swimming pools own club, scouts and explorers took part in raising money or just groups of friends who decided to represent a worthy cause.
There were two teams that swam specifically for the Reedham trust, a charity that helps orphaned boys by giving them financial support. The first ‘the old boys’ swim every year without fail, the second hold the record for the swimathon at 188 lengths. This year however they were lacking a swimmer and so it was down to the rest of the team to pick up the flag and carry on. At the end of the time the achieved a respectable length count of 174 which was the highest in their session. The rotary club very kindly agreed that 60% of all the donations made would go the Reedham trust with the remaining money raised being donated to other worthwhile causes.
The Purley swimathon is a really fun family event that I commit to every year, there is a wonderful viewing gallery on the side so the spectators and your family can cheer you on. Its fun but it is also a brilliant way to raise money for charity.
