In the UK we regard ourselves as a fully immersed multi-race society with everyone harmoniously living together. You can take a twenty minute drive in Hounslow and see a C of E, Catholic, Baptist church and a synagogue, this shows how many cultures there are living together. It is ordinary to walk down the street and see a woman in a full burka or a priest doing his daily rounds. In this type of society there are bound to be little skirmishes but people should be relatively fine with all the cultures and faiths.

However, sitting on the tube I was shocked to see a calm situation turn to a frightening one, not for me but for children. It all began with two twenty-something year olds talking with each other; they included a few swear words getting excited for the great Saturday night ahead. When the language got out of hand, the man asked them to stop swearing as he had his young child with him and in response he receive a torrent of verbal abuse from the 2 men. The son was obviously surprised that his dad had spoken up, hid behind his parent.

Evidently the father took his son further away from the two men, taken aback at the threats aimed at him. The men then proceeded to make racist remarks and use foul language with raised voices, making sure everyone had heard. Some elderly women decided to tell the men off and soon everything went back to normal. This may seem like a harmless little altercation, yet things like this should not be happening at 7pm, not even at all. In this one instance the racism and foul language was quelled but it still showed that there is some negativity in the areas around us. It was sad that this had to have happened in front of children, I was left wondering, what are those children going to grow up thinking?

Even though this event has happened London is still one of the most diverse cities, holding people from all over the world. Over the years more and more restaurants from numerous countries have opened up in the Richmond and Hounslow borough, showing just how open we are to different nationalities. With so many people choosing to live in England, there has got to be some sort of racial harmony or they wouldn’t choose to live here. I believe that many citizens from different

terrains have formed a community where people are happy to live together; it could even be said that it is normal to see all the culture and bodies together in harmony.

With all the different races England just needs to rectify any bad blood and annoyance so London can be without a doubt THE most diverse city. And when everyone is happy transport can go back to mundane, everyday chore with no sudden brawls.
