Valentine’s Day. 14th February. This year it came and went just like any other year. But have you ever stopped to think about how this 'love day' trend started?
The story starts in ancient Rome at a time of war and misery. Claudius the second, the emperor at the time, was intent on having more men in his army. With this thought in mind, he banned all marriages, so men would not have a life to be attached to, and therefore they would join the army. Seeing this as being wrong, the Christian priest, St Valentine, continued to marry couples in secret. When he was discovered, he was sentenced to execution and he died on the famous day: February the 14th. He died for all the love that was out there. Later he became an icon for love. The day of his death then started being celebrated as the “day of love”.
So there is the story behind the special day. The simple death of a man who believed in love is now celebrated on the day known as: valentine’s day.
