Beddington Lane will not be the same! Proposed by South West London Waste Partnership there are currently plans for an incinerator to be built in Beddington Lane, Sutton to the dismay of ‘Stop the Incinerator’ campaigners. Viridor, a waste management company say this incinerator is a ‘safe’ alternative to landfill and they are ‘transforming residual waste into energy’. But is it really safe? The campaigners state that dioxins will be released into the air by the 95m high chimney’. On their website Campaigners also say that these are the same type of Dioxins that were responsible deformities suffered by Vietnamese children following the use of them by the U.S. in the Vietnam War. If this is true, this pollution will effect much of the surrounding areas including Mitcham. How can this be allowed?

On 1st March, to voice their opinions the ‘Stop the Incinerators’ campaigners will hold a demonstration at Viridor’s regional offices in West Malling. Whilst there the campaigners will submit a letter to the company. There are also other actions planned by campaigners such as a meeting with Sutton council. Show your support for the campaign by watching the screening of their film ‘Trashed’ on March 8th ,7pm at Fairfield halls. The trailer can be seen at http://trashedfilm.com. The donations from the screenings will help fund this important campaign. Be sure to watch this intriguing and informational film on the issues raised from incinerator.
