I would guess that 99% of school students who wake up before 8 o’clock are too tired throughout the day – and in the morning especially. I think that starting school an hour later, half nine, would be far easier for everyone and we might even be able to learn easier. I did a presentation on this subject exactly in an English lesson and 100% of the class agreed that starting later and finishing later will increase their ability to learn.
That one extra hour of sleep would be enough for students to get enough rest for healthy development and will decrease the amount of ‘tired’ pupils in early morning lessons. We know that we use the pre-frontal cortex of the brain to learn, and studies show that when tired, this area of the brain is significantly less active. So therefore starting later should increase learning ability. I asked a number of people what they thought of the idea around school: “I really like the idea. I hate waking up early and I think that in all of my morning lessons I never learn anything because I keep falling asleep!” I also asked someone else who replied, “good idea, but doesn’t that mean we will be going home later?” and I replied, “yes, however we could just cut an hour out of your 1h 40m lunch break instead, or finish later, it’s not like anyone does anything after school on school days anyways, do they?” in which he replied, “very true Joe, I like the idea a lot then!”.
I really think the government should propose the idea to the general public and see what they think. If it’s a matter of going home an hour later and getting better grades, I’m sure that the majority of people would think it’s worth it. What do you think?
