The Kingston rotary club are committed to help worthwhile good causes in Kingston, in the UK and around the world. “Through strong friendships and with enthusiasm to get involved, we search out new projects to support, promote and enhance. We focus on helping small effective projects over a long term both locally and overseas. This enables members to really make a difference.” This was taken from the front page of their website which holds numerous schemes of helping the poor. Their latest endeavour was the “end-polio” campaign”, in which hard working volunteers ordained through the snowy weather to raise money for victims suffering from polio.

Poliomyelitis (Polio) is a disease, which occurs mostly in children. If it enters the bloodstream, it attacks the central nervous system and destroys motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness. Different types of paralysis may ensue, the most common being spinal paralysis. In this country, we have been free of this dreadful disease since the 1960s, but in 1988, it was endemic in 125 countries of the world, including France and Spain.  The disease is still very lethal and is a major problem in lots of third world countries. A simple vaccination only costing 50p is enough to save someone’s life.

Despite of the countless money spent and the effort from tireless volunteers, polio is still a problem., the only solution to this would be exterminating the disease, not stopping until al outbreaks of the disease our taken care off. This is tangible with sufficient funding. The Kingston rotary club has been involved in the fundraising of the polio eradication programme for a long time and is still sternly committed to the cause.

Members of the Kingston Rotary clubs spent hours scouring Eden street on the 23rd February (the anniversary of the founding of Rotary International) for the support of generous donators. They handed out small crocuses which are purple to symbolize the marking put on children’s fingers, after they have received a vaccination. Clearly, this is a very worthwhile cause and Kingston Rotarians are impressed with the public’s generous support.
