This year in the bitter cold, London Fashion Weekend turned up the heat at Somerset house. Eager fashion addicts scurried to London on the 22nd to the 24th February to seek out the latest trends and hottest looks for this year’s upcoming Spring/Summer. The catwalk was bursting with gorgeous pieces, from the timeless Eastern Promise showcasing silk oriental kimonos, to headdresses encrusted with diamonds. At the SS13 Trend Show we got a snapshot of the most prominent trends at the moment, exhibiting pieces from a more accessible market. As apposed to the out-of-reach masterpieces showcased at the Designer show, the Trend Show employed the best selection of outfits from shops such as Topshop and Miss Selfridge.
The show started with a look called ‘Urban Lifestyle’ aimed to give inspiration to working women with perhaps no time to re-vamp their wardrobes during their busy lifestyle. There was a focus on clean-cut lines and silhouettes, presenting minimalism at its most elegant. Embellishments were kept muted where loud block colour prevailed. The neon colours such as pumpkin orange and lime green were most prominent and were paired with either a simple black, or white. Collared blouses and slim, cropped trousers were propelled down the catwalk exuding a laid-back city style.
The next trend was the biggest of them all. It landed its way into nearly every high street shop in the last month and it goes by the name of Monochrome. This trend was called ‘Graphic Art’ and encompassed spots and stripes with asymmetric patterns placed carefully onto every piece. This look is known most famously for being black and white but at the trend show this traditional 60’s look was splashed with colour and black was replaced with red, neon yellow, beige and most popular of all, cobalt. This gave the trend a whole new perspective, and incorporated the newest upcoming trend of the colour cerulean, a vivid blue shade, which will quickly brighten up our old Winter blues.
The last look, ‘Doll House’ was by far the most feminine. It brought an element of Spring/Summer to the dreary winter day with an array of hot pink hues established in almost every outfit, with some pieces including silk and feather headdresses. There was one dress in particular which summed up the theme of ‘Doll House’. The model wore a pastel pink dress by Her Curious Nature. This piece was dripping with prettiness, starting with the chunky rose headband, moving down to the floaty beaded tunic with layers of sheer silk wisping around the legs. This was the perfect head-start for the Summer and wrapped up the show in soft dusky pinks.
