2012 has been a great year for marvellous movies. An epic and action-filled James Bond movie, “Skyfall”, appeared in the scene then after succeeding months, rose to the top of the UK Box Office for being the highest-grossing movie in the United Kingdom. An American romantic comedy-drama movie adaptation of novel, The Silver Linings Playbook, also gave the audience a glimpse of what it looks like if two individuals with mental disorders meet. Ironically and surprisingly, it turns out to be a heartwarming and cute romantic story. Two movies based on true events that mark a horrific but important history for Americans such as Argo and Zero Dark Thirty opened the eyes of viewers about the mission to rescue workers of the embassy who were held captives in Iran and the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. A British musical drama film based on the critically acclaimed novel and musical, Les Misérables, also made millions of people cry and realise how important it is to do good to people. An optimistic and a beautifully-crafted movie, Life of Pi, with a life lesson about finding God, religion, and appreciating the beauty of life made millions leave the cinema filled with wisdom and having gained a new philosophy. There are many more to mention and that includes all the movies that are nominated at the recent Academy Awards honouring the best movies of the year.
The 85th Academy Awards or The Oscars took place on the 24th of Sunday 2013 in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It aired here in the United Kingdom via satellite. The prestigious ceremony was hosted by Seth MacFarlane who gave this Oscar a huge increase in ratings but was deemed controversial for his offensive humour. Though this was the case, it was still an entertaining night; that is, for those who are not the subjects of his jokes but for those who agree with his satire. All the performances in the Academy Awards were all glorious naming a few which includes Adele singing “Skyfall”, Catherine Zeta Jones re-enacting “All That Jazz” from “Chicago”, and the cast of Les Misérables performing “One Day More” which gained a standing ovation and gave goose-bumps to all the viewers. The actors and actresses of the musical movie sung it so outstandingly; it left all the viewers in awe.
One of my friends who watched the ceremony said, “All the performances were so beautiful. Les Misérables performing was the highlight for me though to be honest. It sounded like the movie! It just proves that the movie used live recording and all the cast are extremely talented!” Another commented, “I agree! Adele’s Skyfall was breathtaking though and she really deserved to win the Academy. That lady can do anything!” Another of my friends expressed how proud she was for some recipients of the awards, “I am so happy for Anne Hathaway! She indeed deserved it because Fantine made me cry loads! And for Jennifer Lawrence, I was as surprised as her! She was against veteran actresses and she actually won! And the fact she is just like 4 years in the business, she is too perfect! I felt sorry for her when she tripped though but who cares, she won!”
A big number of films may have not been mentioned here but if you visit the official website of the Oscars, you will see a complete list of the winners and nominees. From social network to conversations I hear from many people, everybody is talking about it. It just proves that all these movies have impacted many people including young people. It definitely was a year of appreciation for movies. All these movies are critically acclaimed not just by critics but also viewers of these movies are very open about their love about it. I will see movie reviews in Facebook and read movie recommendations. I was indeed proud for all the winners because most of them were who I rooted for to win. As a fan of movies myself, I am looking forward to all the movies that are going to be released this year. I believe this year has many brilliant movies in store for us.
