Last September, Croydon High students returned to school ready for the start of a new year. They expected much of the same thing: lessons, teachers, assemblies, PE. Yet what they discovered when they arrived was very different to anything they’d foreseen.
Croydon High’s tired blue library was transformed over the summer holidays into tranquil green sanctuary fit for any busy student in need of a place to settle down to work. Admired by seemingly all the students, the new Learning Resource Centre has been restored to one of the school’s most impressive facilities.
That said, there always remains room for improvement.
“It’s really spacious and light,” commented Jessica Riley, a fellow CHS student. “But there’s no clock!” It seems a small fault to dwell on but, with libraries being places of work, a clock would certainly prove useful to all studiers.
Of the colour scheme, which I believe to be rather calming, Ellen Prizeman, another year 11 student, expressed a different opinion. “It’s very green.” Reading into her words, it could be construed that Miss Prizeman is not as fond of the new décor as I am, but that’s not to say she doesn’t like the renovation as a whole.
“It’s definitely refreshing. I think it’s a nicer environment to work in than the previous one was.”
However, it’s not only year 11 who have been enjoying the rejuvenated school library. Year 7 was amongst some of its first admirers. New to the school and overwhelmed by the huge shift in school dynamic, they could be found on the first day of term rocking in the fun new chairs and meandering through the neatly organised shelves, all of which are, admittedly, bright green.
Today, Croydon High School’s Learning Resource Centre is looking just as inviting as it did on that first day of term and is still always a hive of quiet activity. We’re all lucky to have such a great place to use and have to thank Mrs Abrams, the LRC manager, for guarding its integrity and continuing to create such a wonderful learning environment for us all.
