‘A magical evening’ said one visitor of The Tiffin Girls’ School’s Art Evening held on Tuesday 26th February. Individual art displays were presented by 20 of the school’s A-level art students from the Year 12 class for teachers, family and friends to enjoy.
Organised by the talented art department: Mrs Kilpatrick, Ms Hannam and Ms Armstrong, the art was showcased across the entire school with each girl allocated a section of the building ranging from the staircase in the atrium building to a space in the school’s dining room.
The girls’ pieces were based on their previous art textiles coursework which in turn were all based on their own chosen artists and themes. Some of these topics included memory, family and desire. The pupils spent the afternoon preparing and setting up with techniques such as sound, projections and being used. Statement cards were also written to better explain the installation itself.
Visitors walked around the school and had the chance to talk and interact with the students about the process behind their work. One memorable piece by Mitra Dastbaz was set up in the drama studio and comprised of a trail of paper shreds with various quotes leading to a desk illuminated by a single light bulb. Entitled ‘Signal to Noise’ after the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman, her installation was based on ‘Objects: Present and Past’ and used items including a lightbox showing MRI scans, miniatures of objects that appear in the books and an old film reel projected onto the screen.
As an homage to things that are important to her Shannan Syan’s encompassed a chocolate fountain, marshmallows and heavy rock music playing in the background which one person described as ‘a standout piece.’
