In the winter months we are told frequently to keep an eye on our elderly neighbours and family members etc. Throughout the year, we are encouraged to look after the elderly by offering to help them with the shopping or taking some time out to sit and chat with them.
But what many people fail to consider is what about the elderly who are fit and still able to get out and about?
Think about all the activities there are for the OAP’s. There aren’t many are there?
I spoke to three women over the age of 60 about whether they feel there are enough activities for them, what activities they would like to do and how they feel the council can go about this.
One of the women said she was disappointed because over the last few years, she hasn’t been able to find any activities. She has visited her local leisure centre, her granddaughter has searched online and still, they have not found any activities for her to participate in.
Another woman said; ‘we as the elderly community are not considered on a daily basis. No one cares about us unless we are ill, vulnerable or moody and complaining. In my opinion, we should have gardening clubs in the summer, cooking classes, aqua aerobics and fun activities like that. Hanging around in a community centre drinking tea isn’t always counted as fun.’
The last woman I spoke to said that the council should run these clubs at a discounted OAP price and hire willing volunteers to run these clubs.
Everyone deserves to be able to live their life to the fullest, and you never get too old to want to have some fun.
