A new Tesco store opened up last week in Old Malden, which is great. It offers better deals and the new competition on that stretch of shops is bound to cause a price fight to win customers. However, I can’t help but think it is the next strain of the superstore plague.

Recent industrialisation has meant big chains of stores have started to take over our high streets. Many believe that this is a good thing, but isn’t that personal touch lost? The smile, the regularity, the friendliness. This is unachievable in these big brand stores. I decided to get peoples thoughts.

“It is a real shame that small businesses are being lost by the growing size of big name brands.” Family businesses are becoming more sparse, but others believe that expansions are a good thing. I talked to people after the opening of the new Tesco store…

“It’s great, there is so much variety. I will not have to travel so far to get my food.” I found this to be a popular opinion amongst the people I spoke to.

The new Tesco store is equipped with state of the art shelving and tilling including self service. “Going in was like the night before Christmas, you didn’t know what to expect” said a local resident I spoke to. However, again I went back to thinking, what about the small businesses.

There is a battle going on between local businesses and high street retail giants. Currently the big businesses are winning and this new store in Old Malden is certainly a statement from Tesco that they will be right in the centre of the war.
