The horsemeat scandal has been not only disgusting the nation, but also dividing opinion amongst people young and old. Some people feel let down by the supermarkets and restaurants that have either knowingly or unknowingly sold them meat with horsemeat in, whilst some do not really seem to mind as long as it is not detrimental to their health.
Here in Surrey schools, children can feel a bit relieved as they have been told that Surrey County Council have said that no traces have been found in their school food. However, they will continue to test for horsemeat themselves as an additional precaution, and for the time being, we could say that there are more meals containing meat being left uneaten than usual.
Speaking to pupils at Tiffin Girls’ School I found that many are concerned that other meat may have entered the burgers and meat products as well as horsemeat. As there are people who do not eat pork for religious reasons, they are anxious this may have happened as the media has reported it in some products supplied to prisons.
Whilst this scandal looks to continue for the foreseeable future, a lot of people are opting out of buying these products, and are opting for chicken or vegetarian options instead. This will definitely effect the profits of many companies, and will hopefully have an affect on ensuring this does not happen again in the future.
