It hit headlines up and down the country. Horse meat? Hidden in our burgers? It couldn't be... The breaking news that most of us have unwittingly been consuming meat from an entirely different animal than we expected left Britain reeling at the 'night-mare' situation that had been exposed.

Brenda Athayde, 41, Sutton stated: 'As a parent, I am horrified at the idea that I may have been giving my children horse meat to eat. This could be dangerous – we don't know how the horses were killed, or whether they were safe to eat. I feel lied to. It's shameful, and quite frankly I am disgusted with the whole situation.'

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of people were in agreement; as David Martyres, 64, Sutton said: 'I am greatly disappointed with the suppliers and sellers of the meat at this great breach of trust. It will take me a very long time, if in fact I ever go back to buying ready meals and other such products.'

Melody Parker, 21, Croydon shared a similar view, stating: 'As a student on a tight-budget, I regularly buy Value products and ready meals. I'm very disappointed and annoyed that others like me who rely on these cheaper products now cannot trust what they are buying.'

Yet whilst many were quick to express their anger and disgust, others adopted a somewhat more relaxed approach to the scandal.

James Humphreys, 23, Sutton claimed: 'Although I wasn't happy to learn that I hadn't been buying what was on the label, to be honest, I don't recognise the difference between horse meat and beef. As long as the meat I'm buying is safe and reasonably priced, I'm happy.'

Similarly, Jordan Nwosu, 17, Croydon said: 'Meat is meat – I've probably eaten horse meat a few times thinking it was beef and I'm still alive... as long as the meat is safe to eat, I don't see what the problem is.'
