Local fans wrapped up in gloves and hats braved the freezing cold to witness the unique coming together of past rugby heroes, with the British and Irish vs French Legends battling against each other in aid of charity on 22nd February. The trophy of the match was the donation of the proceeds to a charity of the winning team's choice, with the British and Irish supporting the charity for disadvantaged young people, "Wooden Spoon". The British and Irish Legends were captained by Martin Corry, a former England player, whilst the French were led by Serge Betsen.
It's easy when watching such a 'gentle friendly' to forget that some of these players once fought voracious battles for their countries, and although the winning streak was undoubtedly with the British and Irish team, you cannot take away from the spirit of the French Legends on this momentous occasion - the first ever Legends match against France.
There was more than one winning streak on the pitch however - with one fan putting more than just his dignity at stake as he careered across the pitch in seriously understated attire for the weather. To cheers and wolf whistles from the crowd, this streaker clad in only his underwear evaded the clutches of the match stewards only to come to an ignoble end when he tumbled face first over the barrier.
And that was not the only entertainment of the evening! Youngsters from schools across the county invaded the pitch during half-time to play their own mini-matches to much support from the crowd. All in all, it was a great evening's entertainment as a precursor to the Six Nations clash the following day - which proved to be a great battle.
