St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls celebrated record breaking A level results this year, it was revealed. Year 13 students gained 29 ‘A’ star A levels; the first year in which this exam grade was available. The school in Pound Street, Carshalton is rated as “outstanding” by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).
The results meant that each student achieved an average of 374 points - better than the equivalent of three ‘A’s at A level. Jackie Johnson, former Principal, said she was “absolutely thrilled” with the memorable set of grades, which meant that more than half of all A level results were either an ‘A’ or an ‘A’ star. Results day at the school on 19 August attracted the attention of the local media, with Johnson’s daughter Natasha, opening her results live on air for local station ‘Radio Jackie.’ Natasha will now go on to study History at the University of York.
Three students in the 6th form managed to obtain ‘A’stars in each of their three A levels. One of the girls, Karen Grima, 18, revealed that “enjoying all homework” was the secret to her success. “My subjects were all great" said Karen, who will read Politics at Manchester University. The school also celebrated its “best ever” GCSE results with 87.1% of Year 11’s achieving five or more ‘A’star –‘C’ grades including english and maths. This is an improvement on the previous year's results, where 85% of Year 11's achieved five or more ‘A’star –‘C’ grades.
