All across the country thousands of people are getting ready to leave their families and take the big leap of starting university.
As a year 11 student who hopes to go on to university after completing sixth form, I was interested in finding out what people missed the most whilst at uni and what tips people who had completed their first year had for those just starting.
To find the answers to my queries I asked a student who is now in her third and final year at Coventry University studying physiotherapy. She told me that what she missed the most was the easiness of living at home. She said, ‘I missed my mum cooking for me every night. I never realised before how long it takes to food shop, prepare meals and wash all my clothes!’ A tip she gave me was that it is very important to get the balance right between keeping in contact with your family and gaining independence away from them. She said, ‘It is easy to overdo the amount of contact you have with your family and to become unsociable with the people in your house. However, as these are the people you will be seeing every day for at least the next year it is important to make the effort with them, especially in your first year.’ This student sounded so enthusiastic about the first two years she has experienced at her university and I am now looking forward even more to when I hopefully become a first year student and I can put these tips into action.
