Wimbledon Book Festival begins on Saturday 2 October.
The nine day festival is entering its fourth year and is continuing to grow rapidly. Launching on Saturday 2 October with community stalls, performances from the Rock Choir and Dancebites in the square and jazz- the diversity of activities this year promises to bring much excitement. Bestselling children’s author Michael Morpurgo and well-loved actress Virginia McKenna team up to talk about their love of animals and the role it plays in their work and lives.
With Anthony Gormley, Tracy Chevalier and Morpurgo along with a Comedy Night in The Big Tent, this bookfest 2010 looks like the biggest yet. Adam O’Riordan, one of Britain’s finest emerging poets reads from his debut collection. Even the famous Wombles are making their way back home to headline the common! The event caters for all interests, from Britain’s best-loved journalists and TV presenter Peter Snow recounting the story of Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon to the bestselling women’s author Kate Fforde, sharing her experiences as a writer and an insight into her newest book ‘A Perfect Proposal’. Activities for young people have taken place throughout the year with storytelling, author events, scriptwriting workshops, journalist panels, play readings etc.
The fair will also mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Harper Lee's ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, with screenings and discussions at the festival venues across Wimbledon.
