This month is Black History Month, where famous black people, such as Martin Luther King and Mary Seacole, and events are remembered and celebrated for their impact and significance on the lives of black people in the past and present. It is also an important time for communities to remember their African and Caribbean cultural roots, profile the traditions of these cultures through stories, festivals and crafts and documenting and preserving the heritage of black communities. Throughout October there will be a massive variety of events, educational workshops, performances and exhibitions involving modern music, dance drama and art in Croydon. Many of these events are free of charge so there is no reason not to come along and participate.

However, these events don’t just run throughout October, but also throughout the year. Sara Bashford, cabinet member for customer services, culture and sport, said: “We’ve got a huge wealth of talent in the UK – and many of our greatest artists and performers trace their lineage back to Africa and the Caribbean. Croydon itself can take pride from the fact that so many people from so many different cultures live here side-by-side. I think that 2010 will be one of the most vibrant and engaging black history months that we have ever seen, and it will be great to see hundreds of people getting involved in the celebrations throughout October.”
